Not fear, but disgust fueled his panic. He ran, stumbling over charred wood, charred limbs, twisted metal, until he reached a clearing in the destruction, a bare spot of earth with a crater at its center. The soil was scrubbed clear of debris and vegetation, but not the blood and bodies that had fallen in the aftermath of the devastation.

There were a hundred, maybe more, as if the surviving villagers had converged on the point of impact, drawn from the rubble of their homes by some unknown force the way generations of sick and dying animals will converge on the same dying ground.

Some still stirred.

They seemed not to notice Fritz, so he was still, silent, doing nothing to draw their attention.

He released the empty clip from his Luger, letting it drop to the faintly glowing soil as he pulled a backup clip from his ammunition belt.

For perhaps the first time in his life, Fritz hoped he would not have to use it.

Fritz met no resistance in his cautious trek back through the wreckage, and found the old nag waiting where he’d left it.

He put the ruined village to his back and galloped away as fast as the old beast would carry him.
